Understanding Moisture

Controlling the amount of moisture in the air can have many benefits. Building dryers and dehumidifiers are able to control damp conditions and condensation by taking moisture out of the air. Whether you are dealing with the aftermath of flooding, in the construction industry, or reducing damp conditions in warehouses, a powerful dehumidifier can produce a fast and effective result. Dehumidification hire is the best method of actively removing moisture in a controllable, efficient manner.

For the fastest drying time, using dehumidification in conjunction with heating and ventilation is the ideal method. During building construction dehumidifiers can be used to accelerate the rate of drying wet processes such as concrete floors and plaster, not only allowing the construction work to proceed more rapidly but in a way that ensures the drying will not encourage cracking and distortion. Concrete floors that are dried by dehumidification will always settle at the correct moisture level.

Understanding Condensation

Condensation is the process whereby water vapour in the atmosphere is returned to its original liquid state. When moisture in this form exists indoors, problems such as damp and mould growth can occur. Although such conditions are easily treated using dehumidifiers, the problem is not uncommon. Simply increasing the indoor temperature does not alleviate the problem long term, and is costly and energy intensive. Our dehumidifier hire solutions are the most energy efficient solution, saving you money on the costs associated with rendering structural or cosmetic damage caused by condensation and damp.

Moisture Control

High humidity levels and low winter temperatures can be challenging on your commercial, industrial or domestic environment, causing condensation and corrosion to your critical operations. You can improve your productivity and maintain a controlled environment with Andrews Sykes. Some humidity control applications available include:

  • Developing stable environments for exposed metal to prevent corrosion.
  • Reducing drying times at construction sites for concrete, insulation, and fireproofing.
  • Blanketing equipment to protect from humid air.
  • Drying out water-damaged buildings, eliminating the need to replace and reconstruct.
  • Maintaining correct ambient conditions for the laying of flooring.

Our solutions are the most energy efficient solution, saving you money on the costs associated with rendering structural or cosmetic damage caused by condensation and damp.

Our Dehumidification range can be split into two main groups, Refrigerant units and Desiccant units. The smaller refrigerant units are often referred to as building dryer whereas the larger units are referred to as industrial units.

How refrigerant dehumidifiers work.

The way our dehumidifiers work is similar way to the way condensation forms on a cold window. A dehumidifier contains a compact refrigeration system which makes it the coldest place in the room. Air is drawn into the cold dehumidifier where any moisture in the air condenses on the hydrophilic coils and is collected into a container.

The dehumidifiers are fully self-contained, packaged units which incorporate an air circulation fan and refrigeration circuit. The fan draws room air into the machine passing it firstly across a refrigerated heat exchanger (evaporator). This cools the air, causing the moisture in the air-stream to be precipitated onto the evaporator as water.

The electrical driving energy, the energy recovered from the air-stream and the latent energy gained from the dehumidification process is combined and fed to the refrigeration condenser which is thereby heated. The cool dry air from the evaporator passes across this heated condenser before being passed back into the room, dry and warm. The moisture collected from this process is fed away to waste.

Building Dryers

Our powerful and reliable building dryers can handle up to 75 litres capacity a day, delivering high levels of drying power. Available in dual voltage (110v and 230v), these robust units are frequently used during building construction, with the process of dehumidification used to accelerate the rate of drying wet processes in a gentle manner, alleviating possible shrinkage and cracking problems. They provide cost-effective and efficient drying and may be used in conjunction with heaters to boost the drying process.

Moisture is extracted from structures by means of water's natural tendency to release itself from wet surfaces into dry air. This process is not forced and dried areas are free of the surface damage often experienced with heating. It is also rapid and dries the full depth of the plaster or concrete. The use of building dryers and industrial dehumidifiers is also an energy efficient method. These units offer a significantly lower cost alternative to drying by heating and ventilation. With the added convenience of less equipment on site and no fuel deliveries, combined with low supervision, 24/7 operation and no compromise on site security during overnight operation.

Our range includes the new FD40 unit along with the HD500, FD30 and FD15

Industrial Dehumidifiers

Our powerful and reliable refrigerant dehumidifiers can handle up to 600 litres a day, delivering high levels of drying power. Refrigerant units use an evaporator and condenser system and can keep-dry areas up to 13,600m3 and dry out areas up to 6,400m3.

Our range includes the DH150 and the DH600

Desiccant Dehumidifiers

Our desiccant dehumidifiers use moisture-absorbing materials like silica gel. They are used for when very low relative humidity is needed, work is being carried out at extremely low temperatures, a low dew point is essential, or for when the unit has to be ducted into the area that needs drying.

Desiccant materials (such as silica gel) have a high affinity for absorbing water vapour. Today, most desiccant dehumidifiers use the desiccant material in a 'rotor' form. Rotors are manufactured from alternate layers of flat and corrugated sheets impregnated with the active component (desiccant). This forms a vast number of axial air channels running parallel through the rotor structure. As air passes through these channels, moisture is transferred between the air and the desiccant.

When dehumidifying humid air for industrial processes, it is quite common to employ both pre-cooling (moisture removed as condensation) and a desiccant rotor (moisture removed by absorption) in the same air system. Generally our desiccant dehumidifiers comprise of five major components:

  • The component that contains the desiccant material (desiccant rotor), of which there are several types.
  • A fan to move the air to be dehumidified (process air) through the desiccant rotor or material.
  • A fan to move hot air (reactivation air) through the desiccant rotor or material.
  • A heater to heat the air that is used to regenerate the desiccant material.
  • A mechanical device to slowly rotate the desiccant rotor or material bed.

Our desiccant dryers have capacities of up to 10,000 m3/hr. The units come equipped with mounted particulate and oil-removal pre-filters, automatic condensate drains and an after-filter that cleans outlet air down to .01 micron. Our solutions typically comprise of all the necessary instrumentation and ancillary operations and can also be matched with air compressors and after-coolers, together or separately, to provide a total drying solution to your industrial and domestic needs.

Air Movers

Drying systems can often be accelerated by using carpet dryers and fans. These air movers dry the superficial traces of water to ensure better performance out of your dehumidifier. By increasing the velocity of air as it passes the wet surface the drying process will be accelerated.

Humidifiers

In some circumstances it may be necessary to add moisture to the air within an area. Such applications can occur due to air conditioning systems causing the room air to become very dry. In these conditions problems can occur, in IT or communication environments static can become a problem and in offices staff can suffer with dry throats, sore eyes and skin discomfort.

Andrews Sykes offer humidifiers which are simple to use and operate from a standard domestic 3 pin socket. The unit simply adds moisture to the room air in a controlled process by passing the air over a moist media which is kept wet whilst in use.

The Century range of portable humidifiers have been successfully used for many years in an extensive selection of applications. These compact units are simple to operate and fully portable from room to room, simply add water then plug them in. They are ideal for locations like IT, computer and communications rooms, offices, printing processes, industrial processes and manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, hospitals, museums and art galleries.

An extensive range, excellent service and competitive prices: we'll help you control the humidity within your environment.
