Cooling a major televised sporting event means treating each tent as a separate puzzle. At a recent big golf tournament, our experts installed an integrated temporary event cooling and ventilation system across several marquees. This allowed volunteers, media staff, film crews and catering teams to work comfortably from dawn to the last shot.

When you think of broadcasting golf, you probably imagine neatly trimmed greens and slow-motion replays. In reality, itโ€™s all about temporary structures: the media centre, TV gallery, volunteer base and catering. On a hot day, these temporary structures can heat up quickly, creating uncomfortable working conditions for crews and additional challenges for sensitive broadcast equipment. Why temporary event cooling matters more than youโ€™d think

Marquees are great because theyโ€™re easy to move, but manufacturers rarely design them with climate control. Fill a marquee with people, lighting and broadcast equipment, and the temperature can climb quickly. That can create uncomfortable conditions for crews and put additional pressure on sensitive equipment. Basically, temporary event cooling isnโ€™t simply about comfort; it helps create the right working conditions to keep operations moving.

That was the whole point of one of the yearโ€™s most famous golf broadcasts, where a few temporary marquees were used as essential working spaces. Our specialists were brought in to design and deliver a complete temporary cooling for events package.

Every marquee came with its own demands, so no single unit could solve everything. First, the media centre and TV centre needed reliable and steady cooling for broadcast AV equipment and the teams running it all day. Meanwhile, the catering marquee needed extraction as well as cooling, because feeding an event this size generates serious heat and airflow. With several areas to cover, close coordination between suppliers proved essential โ€“ and it took several weeks of planning to get everything working as one.

Designing one integrated cooling system for a live event

Successful event air conditioning hire starts with understanding how each space will actually be used. Our teams worked alongside the marquee installation company, production crew and the generator power provider to assess individual needs and create a coordinated system.

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, our experts combined chiller hire, portable air conditioning and ventilation equipment into one integrated package:

Chillers: the cooling backbone

The chillers provided the core cooling capacity, led by a 150kW Heat Pump Fluid Chiller and supported by a 50kW Series 2 Fluid Chiller, Fast Chill 45 Series 2 and 30kW HP Fluid Chiller. Basically, they produced chilled water that was then used by all the other systems.

For this event, the use of multiple different chillers made it possible to match the systemโ€™s cooling capacity to the needs of individual rooms, rather than relying on a single oversized unit.

Air handling and portable cooling

Next, the fan coil units and portable air conditioners distributed conditioned air throughout the marquees.

This combination of 15 x 15kW Chiller Fan Coil Series 2 units helped distribute conditioned air through the marquees, while four Polar Wind Style portable air conditioners provided additional targeted cooling.

As a result, the teams got a steady, comfortable airflow exactly where they needed it, without any clutter of equipment on the floor.

Ventilation and extraction

In the catering marquee, cooling alone wasnโ€™t enough. The AF3900 ventilation fans provided the extraction needed to manage heat and maintain airflow.

For temporary kitchens, catering marquees and other busy event environments, combining cooling and ventilation hire can provide more effective climate control than cooling alone.

One event, three specialist teams

One of the key advantages of this project was the effective collaboration.

The Andrews Chillers team provided the central cooling capacity. The Andrews Air Conditioning team managed air distribution and local temperature control, whilst the Andrews Ventilation team provided extraction for the catering area.

This integrated approach meant the client received more than individual pieces of hire equipment: they received a bespoke temporary cooling system tailored to the specific requirements of the event.

Thorough preparation and coordination between our specialists and other contractors ensured full compatibility of all system components, including the equipment itself, the power supply, and issues relating to placement and installation.
