Sykes Pumps assist with ballasting process on the River Tees

A heavy transport company specialising in the movement of burdensome loads required our assistance for a large-scale project in northern England. Sykes Pumps were contacted and asked to supply pumps to counterbalance a barge by pumping water in and out of various compartments. This process was carried out to keep the vessel stable while a crane gantry was steered on to it.

The crane itself weighed over 250 tons and would create a large load shift if driven straight onto a moored vessel. Barges are made up of separate sectioned partitions, so when pumps are used to ballast them, they remain completely still while the operation is executed.

We worked with the customer to ascertain and collate all necessary equipment which was then delivered at the requested time. A team of four engineers visited the site to install and commission the pumps, ensuring they were suitable for this assignment. The client was very satisfied with the solution provided and has been using our services for a number of years.
