For many years, Sykes Pumps has provided an international parcel logistics company with a temporary pump hire solution to allow annual maintenance of fire pumps at their flagship premises in Heathrow. So, when our client was planning to undertake routine upkeep of their pumps and pipework during the autumn, we were confident in our ability to deliver suitable replacement equipment and ensure that a fire protection solution was on standby. With no room to compromise on safety, our engineers visited site to reassess the job and ensure that a critical fire suppression application could be correctly installed. It was recommended by Sykes’ regional expert that two diesel driven HP100 high performance pumps were used, and these were delivered to site at a pre-arranged time. There were two separate warehouses requiring a stand-in fire protection system, with an HP100 pump deployed at the entrance of each. Both pumps were situated outside the building and connected to an external fire hydrant which was in turn connected to an indoor sprinkler system. Each pump drew water from a 30,000-litre tank parked on the forecourt, ensuring that the required water capacity would be immediately available in the unlikely event of a fire. Interestingly, until recently our client had previously only utilised this type of fire protection solution at their training base in Heathrow. However, there are now plans for them to replicate this arrangement across all of their warehouses – including overseas. The simplicity with which Sykes Pumps demonstrated that back-up fire protection pumps can be installed has played a huge part in the company’s change of policy and a testament to the professionalism of our technicians throughout this project. Overpumping systems bypasses sewer mains on hotel grounds

Before a hotel could reopen for business following a change in ownership, the new management team had to address an outflow of sewage that had been streaming over a footpath on site for the previous few months. Prior to the hotel changing hands, the building was left derelict and the sewage connection to the mains had been disconnected by the local water company. Understandably, this was an issue that our client wanted addressed with pressing urgency as it was costing them money every day the hotel was unable to open. Plans had been drawn up for a new main to be laid over the coming months but in the meantime, it was essential that an overpumping hire solution could be found. A Sykes Pumps salesperson visited the site to assess the situation and to calculate the required overpumping distance. Two Piranha S21 submersible wastewater pumps were subsequently recommended because of their ability to handle effluent and small solids. These were installed utilising the customer’s power supply and fitted with telemetry and more than 120 metres of 2” discharge hose in order to bypass the live sewer and reach the designated discharge point. Since being installed, our pump hire arrangement has worked continuously for several weeks and will remain in place until the new main has been constructed. Sensing the customer’s desperation, our regional expert proposed a dehumidification hire solution over the phone to accelerate the response time and allow kit to be in position later that day. Having been given the dimensions of the affected retail space, we were able to recommend the deployment of eight FD40 DV dryers which are specifically designed for flood recovery scenarios. Despite receiving the enquiry on a Saturday evening, our team worked together to ensure that the required units could be collected from our depot, delivered to site and installed before 10pm. Our equipment remained almost constantly in operation for five days, allowing moisture to be extracted and all carpets and surfaces to be completely dried before the end of the working week. By reacting as quickly as we did, we were able to guarantee to our client that their store would be ready to reopen its doors to the public – and it duly was.
