Although perhaps most commonly associated with irrigation, water transfer and sewage movement, pumps can also be used on other specialist assignments including dust suppression applications. In such scenarios, liquid can prove particularly effective in capturing airborne particles and cause them to fall downwards rather than disperse into the open air. A leading demolition contractor recently approached Sykes Pumps in the hope that we could help convert fire hoses into a dust suppression system while several derelict buildings were razed. Our assistance was primarily needed to alleviate health and safety concerns, minimise any environmental impact and increase productivity on the job itself. The client was specifically looking for high pressure pumps to provide atomised misting which would then create a water curtain, thus stopping the presence of dust becoming dangerous or problematic. From the initial conversation, our regional expert already had a reasonably accurate impression of the requirements prior to a site survey being conducted. Once this had been completed, we adapted two of our HP100 jetting pumps which allowed them to be connected to fire pumps on site. Manufactured with this type of application in mind, our HP100 pumps were very well received by the customer who expressed satisfaction at their performance and reliability. Thanks to our solution, we were able to ensure the area was cleaner and significantly improve visibility for those working in the area. This not only meant that our client’s team could conduct demolition tasks more safely but also helped reduce the risk of harmful particles being inhaled by people in the immediate vicinity.

Exhibitions, like most indoor events, require thorough planning to ensure they are remembered for the right reasons and enjoyed by those in attendance. Often, the time of year will dictate whether or not a source of air conditioning is required, but sometimes the type of event will be a greater influencing factor – as was the case in a project we recently worked on. The organisers of a special ‘tech show’ at the O2 Arena contacted us before the event was set up. As part of proceedings, there was a special demonstration that involved showcasing a range of modern HDR and LED TVs. A number of viewing pods were installed – each with a particular type of television inside – where attendees were able to test and explore their key features. While the continued comfort of guests was partly responsible for our client requesting some air conditioning, they admitted that it wasn’t their primary motive. Our customer was aware that with so much electronic hardware on display in a relatively confined space, there was potential for the equipment to produce heat and cause temperatures to rise. Our solution to the issue was as simple as it was effective, and made even easier to install thanks to the advanced notice we were given. Because the client was aware that air conditioning units were going to be deployed around the application, suitable sized holes were made in each of the pods to allow ducting to pass through. A total of fourteen ET25 exhaust tube air conditioners were deployed on site, with each unit assigned to and positioned outside a particular pod. Ductwork was then fed through the openings that had been created, delivering a constant supply of cool air to the people and equipment inside.

Any bride or groom will tell you that there is an overabundance of things that warrant attention in the build-up to their big day, with themes, guest numbers, catering and music choice already giving organisers plenty to think about.

Data centres and server rooms are among the most temperature-sensitive applications around, so there can be no room for error when it comes to ensuring that climate control systems are operating properly. This means conducting regular maintenance which should include the frequent replacement of filters, coils and the cleaning of drains and other components. Many cooling solutions will also comprise of direct expansion (DX) units, which function by cooling indoor air using condensed refrigerant liquid. These, too, will also need to be replaced from time to time to help preserve the longevity and performance of a fixed air conditioning system. Earlier this month, a global technology services provider contacted us with the expectation that we could deliver and install a temporary cooling arrangement while their DX units were decommissioned. Our client was keen to source substitute equipment as quickly as possible because there were concerns about the potential vulnerability of their UPS rooms if alternative kit could not be supplied almost immediately. The customer estimated that a stand-in air conditioning solution would be needed for a total of 12 weeks, which was the length of time that they anticipated it would take for new DX units to be obtained and installed. Aware of the likely consequences of a temperature-induced malfunction or breakdown, our engineers reacted instantly to deliver six of our PAC 60 split type units to the client’s site in Hertfordshire. We’re delighted to report that the project ran extremely smoothly despite the urgent nature of the hire, and there are already plans to install a similar cooling solution inside a separate data centre at the same location. At present, there is great pressure on hospitals to improve patient flow and increase the number of appointments available for people with existing medical conditions. To facilitate this, healthcare trusts across the country have solicited the services of a world-class clinical provider with the capability to conduct most major procedures from mobile units stationed on hospital sites. Andrews Air Conditioning was recently approached by a company known as being the standard-bearer in this niche industry, following the development of a cooling requirement. The client explained that hot seasonal weather was affecting temperature management which could have had harmful physiological implications for those scheduled to undergo operations. With costly delays likely and avoidable disruption to an already hectic schedule also very much on the cards, finding a practical solution quickly was imperative. Fortunately, our broad range of air conditioning units and nationwide presence made this easy! Despite receiving the enquiry at 2pm on a Friday afternoon, our local expert was able to visit site, survey the job and propose the most suitable kit within just two hours. We recommended the deployment of a single HPAC45 unit outside the application, with ducting fed through a hole that was created by removing a supply fan in the wall. This unobtrusive configuration ensured a constant supply of cool air was circulated throughout the mobile operating theatre, instantly addressing what was originally a major concern. The proficiency of our regional team was further emphasized by the fact that our air conditioning solution was installed and functional later that same evening – something that very few suppliers would have the resources to implement. This particular customer had not used our services previously, but our credit control team worked swiftly to open an account almost instantly to help process an emergency hire for a critical market sector. Designated quarantine hotel hires air conditioning as chiller replacement

As part of a wider effort to prevent the spread of both new and existing COVID variants, strict measures are currently in place for people arriving from a ‘red list’ country. This now means that any person fulfilling the aforementioned criteria must stay in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 full days before they can proceed to their intended UK destination. To help with the smooth implementation of this process, the government has assigned hotels in all major cities to be specifically used as quarantine centres. Andrews Air Conditioning was recently contacted by one of these hotels after their chiller systems were taken offline to allow for urgent maintenance work. Following the issue, we received an emergency enquiry from the client’s estates team who sought a multi-unit air conditioning solution to cool occupied guest rooms across several floors of the building. Our client was obliged to ensure that everyone staying at the hotel had access to a source of air conditioning, with temperatures regularly reaching the high 20s at the time of enquiry. After discussing the requirement over the phone, it was decided that a total of 45 portable Polar Wind units would provide the desired number of rooms with cooling. The client originally suspected that additional equipment would be required, but their fixed VRV systems were still functioning properly and supplying air conditioning to communal areas within the building. Within hours of the agreement being established, we delivered all units to the hotel in West London despite the potential logistical challenges of quickly coordinating a hire on this scale.
