The temperature of a server room is arguably the most critical metric to consider in a data centre environment, with catastrophic consequences for hardware overheating. Keeping computer equipment and electronic components at a consistent, cool temperature is imperative and eliminates the likelihood of suffering any downtime caused by malfunctions. Our familiarity with this sensitive industry has seen us install temporary cooling solutions for big name customers across the country. So, when a major telecommunications provider encountered chiller failure at one of their London locations, the facilities manager responsible for the premises contacted Andrews Air Conditioning immediately. The client’s existing cooling mechanism was unable to function as pipework feeding internal air handling units was badly damaged, preventing chilled water from passing through the system. As a result, major repair works would need to be carried out, necessitating that an emergency temporary cooling arrangement was deployed until this could be completed. Our engineer proposed the use of two 100kW chiller units to be deployed outside the building and connected to a number of 15kW air handling units positioned inside the two server rooms requiring cooling. Given the urgent nature of the project, all kit was delivered, installed and operational a short while later despite receiving the enquiry during a very hot weekend. With the chillers up and running within a few hours of us being made aware of the issue, we were contacted again the next day with the client needing a separate cooling solution. They sought some additional units to keep temperatures below 10⁰C in a battery room situated in the same building, with two PAC 60 air conditioning units supplied later that afternoon. This job is an excellent example of Andrews’ ability to call on our resources with minimal warning and deliver short-term cooling to a client following two unconnected requirements in the same building. Prominent UK water supplier requests multi-site cooling hire

When one of the country’s largest water authorities contacted Andrews following an issue at one of their regional pump housing sites, we were quick to take action. Although you might assume that a water company would most commonly require temporary pumps from us, it was an air conditioning hire that was needed on this occasion. Our customer had rented dozens of portable heating units from us the previous winter, with the successful completion of that particular project culminating in them earmarking us as a potential air conditioning supplier going forward. Fast forward seven months to high summer temperatures and the client was now desperate for cooling equipment due to their pump housing overheating. The problem could have led to all pumps within the station tripping out due to built-in thermal cut-outs forcing shutdowns, leaving a large residential area without a water supply. Deemed an emergency that necessitated an immediate response, our local expert was able to use prior knowledge of the site to quickly propose a viable air conditioning hire package. Three PAC 60s were then delivered less than three hours later, where they were strategically deployed to ensure that large volumes of cold air could be continuously directed on to pumps and switches. Impressed with our prompt service and the effectiveness of kit provided, the client has since asked us to install similar air conditioning solutions at their three main sites. During the build-up to summer, Andrews Air Conditioning was approached by a prominent South Coast hospital seeking temporary comfort cooling across multiple wards. The client had been reassured by our COVID-19 precautions and was keen to select a supplier committed to health and safety best practice. Our sanitisation and sterilisation procedures and use of PPE on site were specifically cited as being among the reasons they opted for us. Having hired air conditioning units to this hospital in each of the previous four summers, we were familiar with their requirement and what it was they needed. Their preference, as always, was to deploy several individual units within each ward to provide comfort cooling for both patients and staff. As a result, around 60 Polar Wind portable air conditioners were delivered to the hospital out-of-hours. Despite the customer’s familiarity with our kit, they requested that our engineers handle the installation to ensure everything was operating effectively before seasonal temperatures got too warm. By supplying the kit outside of normal working hours, we were able to move the units around the building and minimise disruption within a busy and fully functional hospital. Instead, our regional expert called the client directly to gain a better perspective of the project and assured them that kit could be delivered early the following morning. Despite receiving the enquiry at short notice, we worked around the clock to ensure that a dozen Polar Wind portable units could be quickly supplied in order to provide struggling medical professionals with some respite. The kit was delivered to an agreed location on site in order to eliminate the potential for people to come into contact unnecessarily. Andrews commit to Europe-wide air handler investment

Following a significant investment both in the UK and across Europe, it is with great delight that we announce the introduction of a new lightweight 50kW FCU air handler. This unit has been designed for both heating and cooling applications and features modern Inverter drive technology that allows a full percentage range of speed settings as opposed to just one or two variations. This energy efficient air handler consumes just 1.8kW of power per hour of operation while offering significant air flows of up to 11,500m³/h. It has a nominal cooling duty of 50kW and a nominal heating duty of 100kW. The product’s modest dimensions allow it to fit in a standard box van while its wheel-mounted design simplifies transportation and aids manoeuvrability. Fitted with internal condensate pumps and an air filtration system, the 50kW FCU air handling unit is suitable for use in a range of environments including marquees, offices, events, archives, restaurants and hospitals. Sykes Pumps provides dewatering solution for water main project

Seeking a bespoke solution to assist the construction of a major new water supply, a well-known contractor based in Cumbria contacted Sykes Pumps for a high capacity dewatering operation. As the project involved the construction of a twin 30km pipeline to enable unaided flow between a reservoir and a new water treatment centre, the client sought an effective and reliable pump hire arrangement that could be managed by their site team. Jonathan King said: “The client contacted us with the idea of creating wells along the route of their excavation where we could locate pumps to dewater below the excavation depth. It was an unusual proposal but the proximity of natural water courses and seasonal rain levels in Cumbria meant that dewatering the area was a significant challenge. “Our role was to develop the customer’s idea into a viable solution and install the equipment to provide reliable dewatering infrastructure that could be managed by the client’s team on site.” Six wells were dug, each to a depth of six metres, with a P701 electric submersible pump designated to each well. Providing flow rates of up to nine litres per second, these units can operate at heads of 16 metres and offer a robust solution in scenarios where constant use is required. A further nine 3” SP30 submersibles were deployed nearby, ensuring the presence of water was removed to allow the installation of pipework. We also supplied ten Super Wispaset diesel pumps which were situated on the opposite side of the excavation area to that of the submersible units. Explaining the decision to use diesel units in this manner, Jonathan King said: “In this area of the site, the power connections to electrical submersible pumps would have needed to run across the dig area, so, for safety reasons, we opted for diesel pumps here. These were supplied as bunded pumps to avoid any risk of fuel spillage and we provided toolbox talks for the client’s site teams to ensure that operatives were familiar with safe and efficient operating requirements for all the equipment installed.” A Sykes engineer revisited site on a fortnightly basis to assess the performance of our pumps and ensure they continue to perform as expected. Guaranteeing a four-hour response time throughout the project’s duration, we afforded the client maximum peace of mind and designed a flexible pump hire arrangement that allows seamless movement to new locations as and when required.
