Sustainable Solutions for eco-Conscious Businesses
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a completely renewable alternative to traditional diesel oil and allows users to reduce their greenhouse gas production by up to 90%. Produced via the hydrotreatment of vegetable oils, HVO is considered a premium quality fuel with a chemical structure so similar to regular diesel that it can be used interchangeably.
In recent months, HVO fuel’s popularity has surged as businesses across the globe look for greener ways of operating. When in its purest form, HVO can be used in diesel engines without need for modification.
Many engine manufacturers now consider HVO a perfect substitute for red diesel, with its use worldwide becoming increasingly common.
As a fossil-free fuel, HVO offers businesses the following advantages:
- Improved environment and corporate social responsibility
- Optimal performance all year round
- Carbon footprint reduced by as much as 90%
- No Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME), sulphur or fossil content
- Extensive storage life of up to 10 years
- Compatible with existing infrastructure and equipment
- Safer handling and cleaner burning
As part of our fuel management service, Andrews Sykes now offers HVO to customers desiring a low emission replacement for diesel.
HVO fuel can be used on all oil heaters and non-electric boilers in our hire fleet, as well as any diesel-driven pump. For more information on the use and availability of HVO fuel at Andrews Sykes, contact us today on 0800 211 611. Alternatively, you can fill in an enquiry form by clicking here.

FAQs
How is HVO fuel made?
HVO fuel is made by the hydrogeneration of vegetable oil and animal fats. This process removes any contaminants that can affect the fuel’s performance and allows it to be safely stored for up to a decade.
Is HVO fuel more efficient than diesel?
Yes! Diesel has a cetane level of 51 – significantly lower than HVO’s cetane level which ranges between 70 and 90. The cetane number refers to how well a fuel burns in the combustion chamber: the higher the number, the faster it ignites. This, in turn, generally leads to an improved engine performance and thus reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
What are the main benefits of HVO fuel?
There are countless, but the main one is undoubtedly that its use can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90%. Using HVO also improves your corporate social responsibility rating, meets all legislative requirements, has excellent cold weather properties and can also save you significant sums in reduced running costs.
Is HVO fuel toxic?
No. HVO is completely biodegradable because it is made entirely from renewable waste materials. It is therefore non-toxic, odourless and perfectly clean and safe to use.
Which products can I use HVO fuel in?
HVO is suitable for use in our heaters, boilers and all traditionally diesel-driven pumps within our hire fleet.
