Our 24/7, 365-day emergency service sprang into action to reopen the Channel Tunnel before New Year’s Eve.
When crisis strikes train infrastructure, every minute without resolution means more disruption and danger. Andrews Sykes thrives on tight timelines and high stakes to deliver solutions. Our emergency dewatering expertise coupled with our fast response allow us to tackle challenges of any size.
As New Year’s Eve approached, news outlets reported on water flooding the tunnel, forcing the suspension of Eurostar and Southeastern trains. With New Year’s travel plans disrupted, passengers faced anxiety, disappointment, and stranded journeys. Swift intervention was needed to drain the tunnels and resume rail services at a critical time of year.
Within two hours of the call, our pump sales engineers conducted on-site analysis and rapidly deployed the equipment that was needed. We dispatched two 4-inch submersible P3001 drainage pumps with control panels. The next morning, we sent a representative to inspect operations and specify additional units to supplement what the customer initially required.
Following engineer recommendations, we promptly supplied two more P3001 pumps with panels to the far end of the site. Together, our four adaptable 4-inch submersible pumps rendered a custom fit for the tunnels’ needs – flexing output, performance features, and accessory compatibility. Our control panels also deliver intelligent remote operability.
Despite immense time pressure and difficult conditions – less than 48 hours after the incident – Eurostar announced at least one tunnel was back in operation after our pumps controlled the flooding, enabling full rail restoration and allowing trains to get back on schedule over the busy period.
With round-the-clock availability, we proudly reopened the Channel Tunnel to bring in the new year with a win, showcasing a responsive service, application mastery, and product range ready for any dewatering crisis.
