Swift pump hire ensures sewage treatment maintenance project is completed months ahead of schedule

When one of the country’s largest sewage treatment plants reported an issue with their fixed pumps, they knew that Sykes Pumps could provide a suitable replacement pump hire package while the original units were repaired off site.

Two of the customer’s pumps were therefore taken offline, and we had to propose a solution that would also facilitate the repair of a valve which was crucial in staving sewage effluent and preventing overflowing.

It was decided that deploying six 6” submersible pumps in the overflow chamber and having a seventh on standby would be sufficient for over-pumping a flow of 1,200 litres of sewage per second. Positioning our pumps inside the chamber could have proved a real challenge but any potential difficulties were overcome by using the cranes on our Hiab lorries.

Pump hire safeguards lagoon at disused quarry

Once depleted of their desired resources, quarries are generally abandoned and left to be reclaimed by nature. This was the intended outcome of a Plymouth quarry that ceased operation several years ago, but a number of precautions had to be taken to ensure the site was safe ahead of its official closure.

The presence of a large lake within the grounds was identified as a particular cause for concern, with health and safety representatives insisting that water levels would need to be kept low.

With Sykes Pumps’ experience of quarries and mines well-known in the South West, we were contacted by an excavation specialist and tasked with addressing the lake’s depth.

Sykes Pumps provides off mains drainage solution

Amid the construction of approximately 250 new properties in Essex, Sykes Pumps was contacted by the housing developer and asked to resolve an issue pertaining to the removal of waste and sewage. Despite some of the homes already being inhabited, the surrounding residential area had not yet been connected to a sewer main.

As a result, all sewage was retained within a 15,000-litre cesspool on-site, which naturally requires emptying once it reaches full capacity. With no permanent solution available and our client suffering some negative PR due to the extreme odours being given off, a temporary pumping arrangement was required.

Sykes Pumps assists construction of replacement railway bridge

The rebuilding of a railway bridge in Bristol was dependent upon the availability of a reliable pump hire solution. Our client requested an arrangement that would permit the removal of groundwater at multiple locations and allow construction workers to proceed with an upgrade project costing hundreds of thousands of pounds.

As the contractor was required to complete the project within a relatively short space of time, the urgency of the initial enquiry meant we had to act quickly and efficiently to deploy multiple pumps just hours after the call.

Sykes Pumps aids Cumbria pipeline installation

A Keswick-based contractor sought a tailored pump hire solution for the purpose of transporting water during an underwater tunnelling job, prompting them to contact Sykes Pumps. The proposed hire would allow the contractor to successfully proceed with the installation of a new pipeline that was being constructed to allow the transfer of water within Cumbria and back to a primary reservoir.

As the contractor’s site was experiencing a severe issue with run-off water, the scope for larger problems further down the line could have potentially stalled the entire development.

Surface water removal kick-starts building work on residential development

In April this year, permission was granted for more than 100 homes to be built in the Cheshire area following approval of the preliminary development designs. The local council has now given the green light for work on the project to commence, with the contract awarded to a northern-based civil engineering company that has previously worked with Sykes Pumps.

Our client was concerned about groundwater but first needed to tackle the presence of surface water that had accumulated on some parts of the site. Before any excavation work could begin, it was essential that the nuisance water was removed and diverted into a natural watercourse located nearby.
