Sykes Pumps provides water to FIA World Rally Championship

Sykes Pumps was recently contacted by the organisers of motor racing’s premier events and asked to provide support for a major meeting in Cheshire as part of the Wales Rally GB. Returning to Oulton Park for the first time since 1993the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) were putting on a special event showcasing classic British rally cars.

The client required our assistance with regards to creating a water splash for part of the circuit, necessitating the use of a pump with a very specific feature set. While a rally track consists of many bumps, ramps and uneven terrain, the focus of this particular stage was the water splash. These pits tend to be 10cm20cm in depth, around 18 meters in length and are constructed to challenge the build of the car as well as the driver’s skill in coping with slippery surfaces.

Sykes provide pumping equipment for excavation project

Our experts were recently drafted in after a well-known construction company in Essex encountered problems with keeping their site dry. The problem was preventing them from laying concrete foundations as the intended area was too wet.

The construction project was taking place by a large lake which, due to underground digging, was causing water to seep into the site. We were therefore asked to overpump the contaminated water from the excavation area and redirect it back into the lake while removing all sediment and silt.

Sykes Pumps provide pump hire equipment for old Sykes House site

When a well-known construction company had issues keeping a site in South London dry following a sustained downpour, they contacted our pump specialists in search of an effective pumping solution.

The site in question was bought by Henry Sykes Ltd in 1928 and was the home of our head office for many years until its relocation to Wolverhampton. It is situated just a few hundred yards from our flagship depot in Charlton but now looks almost unrecognisable when compared with the area we once occupied.

Sykes provide pumping solution for large scale renovation project

The renovation of one of the South Coast’s most historical theatres was dependent upon the intervention of specialist hire company, Sykes Pumps. Before the project commenced, we sent an engineer to our client’s site – in Eastbourne – to assess the job’s unique requirements.

As part of the overhaul, the entire toilet block was to be relocated elsewhere, along with the sewer that ran underneath it. We were therefore asked to create a diversion to ensure outflows from the original toilet block were redirected to a nearby manhole.

Sykes Pumps features on one of the country’s most popular television soaps

Last week, avid viewers of one of the country’s most popular television soaps may have spotted a Sykes Pumps General Purpose unit being used as a prop on set.

With the dramatic storyline unfolding, our pump was set up to dredge a body of water which – known to those watching at home – was being used to conceal two corpses that were dumped by the plot’s protagonist.

Interestingly, Sykes Pumps was contacted off the back of our client coming across a previous case study in which we detailed using our equipment on a different TV show. On that occasion, our pumps assisted the creation of special effects for a particular scene.

Chaos as Scotland is hit with more snow

Snow, rain and freezing conditions continued to sweep across most of Scotland last night, prompting yellow weather warnings across parts of the country.

The Met Office issued a yellow “be aware” warning, with snow and ice covering much of Scotland as temperatures plummeted overnight. Lows of -13.5°C were also recorded.

Rising daytime temperatures have however begun to cause much of the remaining snow to melt, leading to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency issuing flood warnings across many parts of the country as they brace themselves for rapid snow melt and additional heavy rainfall.

Sykes Pumps Hire drafted in to assist with cleaning aggregate material

A leading manufacturer and supplier of building materials – including aggregate – recently contacted Sykes Pumps seeking a pump hire solution to help wash the building materials before they are sold on.

The client’s existing washing plant system had proved inadequate after its submersible pump suffered a breakdown, leaving it incapable of cleaning the aggregate and costing the company thousands of pounds. This situation prompted the need for our intervention.

Soon after receiving the call, one of our engineers visited the site to conduct a free survey before recommending the best pumping equipment for their application. As a result of this preliminary process, a high performance UVO 150/100 pump was delivered to site along with a 3000ltr bunded fuel tank.

Sykes Pumps help major international airport avert potential flood risk

When the UK’s second busiest airport experienced a potential flood risk, Sykes Pumps were contacted to provide an emergency pumping solution.

Gatwick Airport is currently at risk from two main sources, flooding from the two rivers (River Mole and Gatwick Stream) adjacent to the Airport and flooding from intense rainfall falling on the Airport and exceeding the capacity of the surface water drainage system.

To overcome that risk, civil engineering specialists were drafted in to conduct improvement works to the River Mole in the Gatwick Pond E area, ensuring the river can hold the variable flow rates typical of the location.
