Sykes Pumps provides over-pumping solution for local council

Sykes Pumps was recently approached by a major building and civil engineering company and asked to help assist with the repair of a local culvert.

Before work could take place, our engineers were required to provide an immediate pumping solution to over-pump the stream – cleaning out all the silt build-up and then removing old metal sheeting to allow the contractor to replace it with a new one.

Our response was to propose the hire of an 8” submersible alongside a smaller 6” submersible to catch excess water. We also provided a 60kVA generator and a separate fuel tank to enable quiet operation within a densely-populated neighbourhood.

Sykes Pumps Hire provide emergency pumps for Salmon Farm

Sykes Pumps Hire was recently approached by a salmon farm in the Lake District, with the client requiring a solution to prevent and monitor low water supply.

Our client is based near a Cumbrian reservoir that was highly affected by the 2018 summer heatwave, which subsequently caused the availability of water to almost completely dry up. Amazingly, water levels got so low that the ruins of a previously submerged village began to reappear following a massive depletion of water. The small town was deliberately allowed to flood approximately 80 years ago in order to create a reservoir to provide water for Manchester and the North West of England.

Sykes delivers drain down solution to assist pipework upgrade

Before conducting any repairs or upgrades on a pipework system, it is essential that the sections affected are drained properly ahead of work commencing. In most cases, a specialist pumping solution will be required to oversee this process – which is where we come in.

A well-known utility contractor was recently responsible for upgrading a length of pipeline on behalf of their client, South East Water. As a major account customer of ours, they were extremely familiar with our expansive pump hire fleet and thus knew precisely which unit was required to help them undertake this job.

Local authority seeks Sykes’ input on canal repair project

Like almost everything, canals, banks and locks require sporadic maintenance and inevitably succumb to wear and tear over time. A wide range of work may be undertaken to help preserve a canal and its surroundings, with the primary objectives normally being to prevent any long-term disruption to waterways and avoid any environmental destruction.

For more specific projects, such as the repairing of canal walls, a planned approach may be necessary to ensure conditions allow the work to be completed successfully.

Temporary jetting pump cleans mooring at popular yacht club

A build-up of marine crustaceans and other shellfish on the moorings of a prestigious Sussex yacht club compelled the owners to take steps to remove them. As well as appearing untidy, barnacles and other forms of arthropods tend to harden on surfaces and become extremely difficult to remove if left untreated.

In such situations, a high-pressure jetting pump will often prove sufficient in blasting off the crustaceans and cleaning the docks or boats on which they are attached.

Following the enquiry, our local expect based in the region conducted a site survey before presenting a solution that would facilitate maintenance of the affected moorings. We proposed the use of our 4” HP100 pump, which the client loaded on to a barge that was being used to access all parts of the site.

When sea life conservationists contacted Sykes Pumps regarding the installation of an emergency solution that would protect sharks, penguins, seals and other marine mammals, we reacted quickly to ensure the requirement reached a desirable outcome.

Sykes provide pumping equipment for excavation project

Our experts were recently drafted in after a well-known construction company in Essex encountered problems with keeping their site dry. The problem was preventing them from laying concrete foundations as the intended area was too wet.

The construction project was taking place by a large lake which, due to underground digging, was causing water to seep into the site. We were therefore asked to overpump the contaminated water from the excavation area and redirect it back into the lake while removing all sediment and silt.
