Sykes Pumps provides over-pumping solution for local council

Sykes Pumps was recently approached by a major building and civil engineering company and asked to help assist with the repair of a local culvert.

Before work could take place, our engineers were required to provide an immediate pumping solution to over-pump the stream – cleaning out all the silt build-up and then removing old metal sheeting to allow the contractor to replace it with a new one.

Our response was to propose the hire of an 8” submersible alongside a smaller 6” submersible to catch excess water. We also provided a 60kVA generator and a separate fuel tank to enable quiet operation within a densely-populated neighbourhood.

Sykes Pumps provides emergency pumping solution for house building contractor

At Sykes Pumps, we’re used to receiving last-minute callouts. Our ability to handle projects at short notice is the reason so many customers know they can rely on us when things go wrong. So, when East Sussex based house-building contractor required us to supply an urgent pumping rental scheme, they contacted us at the eleventh hour.

The customer in question was about to close its site for the Christmas period when a situation arose that required immediate attention.

Sykes Pumps was asked to provide equipment to prevent water levels from rising too high during an excavation job. The ramifications of failing to address the issue included the possibility of nearby residents suffering flooding. It was therefore essential that we moved quickly!

Swift pump hire ensures sewage treatment maintenance project is completed months ahead of schedule

When one of the country’s largest sewage treatment plants reported an issue with their fixed pumps, they knew that Sykes Pumps could provide a suitable replacement pump hire package while the original units were repaired off site.

Two of the customer’s pumps were therefore taken offline, and we had to propose a solution that would also facilitate the repair of a valve which was crucial in staving sewage effluent and preventing overflowing.

It was decided that deploying six 6” submersible pumps in the overflow chamber and having a seventh on standby would be sufficient for over-pumping a flow of 1,200 litres of sewage per second. Positioning our pumps inside the chamber could have proved a real challenge but any potential difficulties were overcome by using the cranes on our Hiab lorries.

Sykes installs over-pump arrangement to facilitate vital repair works

Sykes’ pump hire experts were recently called into action after a building contractor got in touch looking for a solution to assist them with a culvert repair. Our client specifically required us to over-pump a subsidiary of the River Rother in West Sussex, so that water could bypass the section needing attention.

The customer was tasked with reinforcing an ageing culvert wall, with engineers working on site around the clock to ensure this was carried out as quickly as possible. Because of this, any pump proposed by our regional technician would have to be capable of silent functionality due to the fact it was situated near houses and expected to be running 24 hours a day.

Sykes provide pumping equipment for excavation project

Our experts were recently drafted in after a well-known construction company in Essex encountered problems with keeping their site dry. The problem was preventing them from laying concrete foundations as the intended area was too wet.

The construction project was taking place by a large lake which, due to underground digging, was causing water to seep into the site. We were therefore asked to overpump the contaminated water from the excavation area and redirect it back into the lake while removing all sediment and silt.

Sykes provide pumping solution for large scale renovation project

The renovation of one of the South Coast’s most historical theatres was dependent upon the intervention of specialist hire company, Sykes Pumps. Before the project commenced, we sent an engineer to our client’s site – in Eastbourne – to assess the job’s unique requirements.

As part of the overhaul, the entire toilet block was to be relocated elsewhere, along with the sewer that ran underneath it. We were therefore asked to create a diversion to ensure outflows from the original toilet block were redirected to a nearby manhole.

Last week, avid viewers of one of the country’s most popular television soaps may have spotted a Sykes Pumps General Purpose unit being used as a prop on set.

Interestingly, Sykes Pumps was contacted off the back of our client coming across a previous case study in which we detailed using our equipment on a different TV show. On that occasion, our pumps assisted the creation of special effects for a particular scene.

Chaos as Scotland is hit with more snow

Snow, rain and freezing conditions continued to sweep across most of Scotland last night, prompting yellow weather warnings across parts of the country.

The Met Office issued a yellow “be aware” warning, with snow and ice covering much of Scotland as temperatures plummeted overnight. Lows of -13.5°C were also recorded.

Rising daytime temperatures have however begun to cause much of the remaining snow to melt, leading to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency issuing flood warnings across many parts of the country as they brace themselves for rapid snow melt and additional heavy rainfall.

Sykes Pumps Hire drafted in to assist with cleaning aggregate material

A leading manufacturer and supplier of building materials – including aggregate – recently contacted Sykes Pumps seeking a pump hire solution to help wash the building materials before they are sold on.

The client’s existing washing plant system had proved inadequate after its submersible pump suffered a breakdown, leaving it incapable of cleaning the aggregate and costing the company thousands of pounds. This situation prompted the need for our intervention.

Soon after receiving the call, one of our engineers visited the site to conduct a free survey before recommending the best pumping equipment for their application. As a result of this preliminary process, a high performance UVO 150/100 pump was delivered to site along with a 3000ltr bunded fuel tank.

Sykes general purpose range of pumps are naturally the first choice for an array of applications, handling everything from clean water to sludge and slurry. In this instance, the temporary pumps were being used for a major demolition project.

After assessing the site and considering the customer’s requirements, our specialists proposed a 4” Sykes GP 100M general purpose pump to remove unwanted groundwater from the excavation – discharging it more than thirty metres away into the nearest manhole.
