Sykes Pumps provides over-pumping solution for local council

Sykes Pumps was recently approached by a major building and civil engineering company and asked to help assist with the repair of a local culvert.

Before work could take place, our engineers were required to provide an immediate pumping solution to over-pump the stream – cleaning out all the silt build-up and then removing old metal sheeting to allow the contractor to replace it with a new one.

Our response was to propose the hire of an 8” submersible alongside a smaller 6” submersible to catch excess water. We also provided a 60kVA generator and a separate fuel tank to enable quiet operation within a densely-populated neighbourhood.

Sykes Pumps help leading university with construction project

When one of West Sussex’s leading universities had plans to develop a new engineering and technological facility, Sykes Pumps was on hand to provide a temporary over-pumping solution to help facilitate the project.

The scheme in question was taking place on a live university campus so required an immediate pump hire solution to assist with a sewer diversion while a section of the existing sewer mains was being replaced.

After assessing the site, our specialists recommended the installation of two 8” electric submersible pumps. The pumps were able to over-pump the sewage from the manholes to a section of the mains approximately 80 metres away in each location, enabling the segment in between to be removed.

Swift pump hire ensures sewage treatment maintenance project is completed months ahead of schedule

When one of the country’s largest sewage treatment plants reported an issue with their fixed pumps, they knew that Sykes Pumps could provide a suitable replacement pump hire package while the original units were repaired off site.

Two of the customer’s pumps were therefore taken offline, and we had to propose a solution that would also facilitate the repair of a valve which was crucial in staving sewage effluent and preventing overflowing.

It was decided that deploying six 6” submersible pumps in the overflow chamber and having a seventh on standby would be sufficient for over-pumping a flow of 1,200 litres of sewage per second. Positioning our pumps inside the chamber could have proved a real challenge but any potential difficulties were overcome by using the cranes on our Hiab lorries.

Sykes provide pumping equipment for excavation project

Our experts were recently drafted in after a well-known construction company in Essex encountered problems with keeping their site dry. The problem was preventing them from laying concrete foundations as the intended area was too wet.

The construction project was taking place by a large lake which, due to underground digging, was causing water to seep into the site. We were therefore asked to overpump the contaminated water from the excavation area and redirect it back into the lake while removing all sediment and silt.

Sykes Pumps help major international airport avert potential flood risk

When the UK’s second busiest airport experienced a potential flood risk, Sykes Pumps were contacted to provide an emergency pumping solution.

Gatwick Airport is currently at risk from two main sources, flooding from the two rivers (River Mole and Gatwick Stream) adjacent to the Airport and flooding from intense rainfall falling on the Airport and exceeding the capacity of the surface water drainage system.

To overcome that risk, civil engineering specialists were drafted in to conduct improvement works to the River Mole in the Gatwick Pond E area, ensuring the river can hold the variable flow rates typical of the location.
