Chaos as Scotland is hit with more snow

Snow, rain and freezing conditions continued to sweep across most of Scotland last night, prompting yellow weather warnings across parts of the country.

The Met Office issued a yellow “be aware” warning, with snow and ice covering much of Scotland as temperatures plummeted overnight. Lows of -13.5°C were also recorded.

Rising daytime temperatures have however begun to cause much of the remaining snow to melt, leading to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency issuing flood warnings across many parts of the country as they brace themselves for rapid snow melt and additional heavy rainfall.

Statisticians predict future flood insurance premium levels

The crucial deal between insurers and the Government has yet to be renewed, potentially resulting in more than half a million homeowners and business owners seeing their buildings insurance bills soar by hundreds of pounds.

Currently the number of people paying £500 for their flood insurance premiums stands at 75,000 – but if a new deal is not reached, figures produced by insurance industry statisticians and announced today, predict the number will rise to 650,000. The number of households paying £1,000 will rise to 135,000 from 21,000, and 4,000 households will end up paying over £2,500.

Bad weather hit the South West of England yesterday causing furious floods and even canal banks to break in some areas. Devon was particularly hit hard after banks at the Great Western canal burst needing an emergency dam to be built.

Due to Sykes Pumps’ 24/7 service, our expert engineers were onsite quickly providing premium pumps and creating a dam to control the flooding canal. Stormy weather brought chaos to Britain yesterday as homes were evacuated, roads and rail came to a standstill and people were left badly injured as a month’s worth of rain fell in just 24 hours.
