Sykes Pumps delighted by Middle East progress

The past twelve months have seen the company take huge strides in the Middle East following our involvement in some of the region’s most prominent developments. Work is now well underway on the Dubai Canal Project, a £400m scheme designed to connect the business bay creek to the sea at Jumeriah.

The canal will cut through various areas of existing infrastructure which must be modified or rebuilt along a three kilometre stretch. Sykes Pumps were initially required to dewater over 100 sheet pile cofferdams to facilitate the construction of manholes for a new sewage system.

This particular phase highlighted the challenges presented by a variation in ground conditions with proximity to the sea. Our previously gained knowledge of the location’s terrain and soil permeability was a factor in the pump solution we provided, which worked effectively in a testing environment and over an extended period of time.

Sykes were then on hand to help connect the old sewage system’s pipeline to the new arrangement. A series of electrical submersible pumps were then deployed at two separate locations, with a further five scheduled in the near future. The expectation is that our equipment will remain on site until at least the summer of 2016.

We are also delighted to announce that a new depot has been opened in Ruwais – a large industrial town situated approximately 250 kilometres west of Abu Dhabi. Since the 1970s, Ruwais has gradually transformed into a self-contained manufacturing hub predominantly comprised of petrochemical, gas and oil applications.

The company currently have around 40 employees based there, carrying out their daily duties on various dewatering projects under construction. The majority are involved in projects for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Takreer. Since first branching out to the Middle East six years ago, we have gone from strength-to-strength and continue to play a significant part in several multi-million dollar investments.

By extending our presence to the district, Sykes Pumps are now ideally positioned to handle local jobs and gain a greater share of business in the area. This marks another rung of steady progression in the United Arab Emirates as we continue to seek out opportunities overseas as well as in the UK.
