And just like that, a new, colder and wetter season is upon us! As the temperature changes, so, too, do the requirements of our customers. Colder weather also tends to lead to a rise in relative humidity – which is not something you should just accept or ignore!

What’s the answer, then? Well, it depends on the issue!

At this time of year especially, we tend to get a lot of enquiries from clients in the construction sector looking to accelerate the drying of wet trades, painting, and other finishing touches. By November, we’ll also start to receive a lot of requests for heating as a frost protection measure.

Telecoms client comes back for more after positive first impression!

Like all businesses, we take repeat custom as a good sign – and we’re always delighted when a satisfied client chooses to return to us again when the need dictates.

Back in 2015, we were contacted by a cloud technology service provider after their data centre’s cooling equipment went down unexpectedly. On that occasion, they were looking for some temporary ventilation to operate alongside some of our portable air conditioning units.

With the requirement urgent and the majority of our FV fans on hire at the time, we were able to improvise almost effortlessly to supply four PAC 22 units and an FH185 heater, which was utilised to great effect on the fan-only mode.

Manufacturing plant maintains output thanks to ventilation hire

Earlier this month, a stricken client reported that their industrial facility’s plant room was constantly overheating, causing all four compressor packs on site to go offline and completely halt production.

The customer – a major account at Andrews Sykes – contacted us for advice shortly after, in the expectation that a solution could be offered quickly. In just two hours, our regional expert calculated the plant room’s required air changes, recommended the appropriate equipment and arranged for its delivery upon receipt of a purchase order.

In this instance, our client was looking for some temporary equipment to effectively supersede the role of air handling units due to be decommissioned. Their primary focus, and reason for contacting, us was to maintain a good level of air quality throughout a large office building.

Air purification offers renewed hope in the fight against Covid-19, study finds

High-tech air quality control solutions could put an end to Covid-19 transmissions in hospitals, according to a recent trial.

As part of efforts to tackle Covid-19 outbreaks within healthcare settings, government officials are on the verge of approving a pilot study involving the use of air purifiers in hospital wards.

This is expected to be similar to the investigation recently conducted at a number of schools in Bradford, where air purification systems were used inside classrooms.

The announcement comes just weeks after separate research carried out earlier this year revealed that filtration systems were able to remove almost all airborne traces of Covid-19.

The vast majority of Covid transmission occurs indoors, with most of this caused by the inhalation of contaminated air particles. In an ideal world, you could prevent – or at least limit – the virus from spreading in your business by keeping infected people off-site. But if we’ve learnt anything in the last 20 months, it’s that it isn’t quite that simple.

Approximately 40% of those carrying the virus are asymptomatic, making it difficult to identify positive cases unless tests are taken every day. In most industries, however, this does not happen. Instead, more practical alternatives are sought, often leading to the acquisition of mechanical solutions such as air purification units.

British kitchen manufacturer seeks ventilation for new warehouse fit-out

Andrews Sykes’ expertise in the field of ventilation has led to us working with big names from a whole host of industries, including a recent project involving a highly regarded kitchen retailer. On this occasion, the construction company responsible for the scheme required a dual purpose solution to aid the construction and design of their client’s newly acquired warehouse in the Midlands.

The first component of the development was to assist with the drying of concrete flooring. Without suitable mechanical ventilation, there was a significant risk that the concrete would retain moisture which could ultimately affect the integrity of the building’s base further down the line. To avoid this potentially disastrous scenario, four high capacity FV900 fans were deployed nearby to provide continuous air movement and allow the concrete to cure properly.

Andrews assists lead contractor on Bank Tube station reconstruction project

The £700m upgrade of one of London’s most recognised Underground stations is expected to be completed by spring 2022, with much of the hard work already done. TFL’s subsidiary London Underground commissioned improvements with the intention of increasing Bank’s passenger capacities by as much as 40%, meaning up to 140 million people will pass through annually once fully operational.

The tunnelling phase of the project was completed in October 2020 and saw more than 200,000 tonnes of material excavated to make way for platforms, escalators, passages and concourses. Due to the nature of the work undertaken during this stage, there was a long-term requirement for mechanical ventilation to ensure the continued wellbeing of engineers on site.

Yorkshire university hires temporary heating and air quality control systems

After 18 months of social isolation and disruption to the education sector, we’re now seeing institutions across the country take action to ensure the wellbeing of students and lecturers. In recent days, there has been palpable excitement across the country as people returned to university campuses in record numbers.

While many students were permitted access to site at points during the previous year and a half, this academic semester will be the first time many have been able to interact with their peers and be taught in a communal environment.
