Andrews work with local councils to provide flood recovery in northern England

The arrival of Storm Desmond in the run-up to Christmas 2015 saw much of the UK badly struck by unprecedented levels of rainfall. Flood defence schemes had largely proved futile and around 60,000 homes were left without power in the worst affected areas. Water also rose to first floor windows in hundreds of houses in Cumbria and Northumberland, with the Met Office announcing that December was the wettest month ever recorded on these shores.

Andrews Dehumidification assists Sheffield school construction

The construction of a new school in Sheffield prompted one of the country’s leading infrastructural companies to get in touch with us to assist with the latter stages of completion. The contractor in charge of the building contacted us regarding a temporary heating hire arrangement which was needed to support the laying of wood flooring.

Before this process could take place, however, it was important to ensure that the temperature of the areas in which wooden panels were to be laid had been kept at 18⁰C or above for at least 48 hours. This was to ensure that air humidity was at a normal level for habitable premises but also to dry any concrete or surfaces that could have conceivably been damp or contained moisture.

Bournville confectionery factory requires emergency drying

A popular confectionery producer faced difficulties relating to the humidity and dampness of one of their Midlands-based storage and distribution areas. At Andrews Dehumidification, we regularly work alongside food production companies to ensure conditions are as they should be, but our involvement in this project was slightly different. Rather than require assistance for controlling relative humidity inside the actual production line, our client needed help adjusting conditions inside the storage warehouses. The area in question had succumbed to dampness after many months of relative humidity being excessively high, leaving cardboard packaging outers wet.

Flood warnings issued nationwide as severe weather strikes

With yellow weather warnings in place for much of England and Wales following torrential rainfall, instances of flooding are expected to affect parts of the UK. The heavy weather has been attributed to a burst of low pressure travelling across the country coupled with warm and humid air linked to Hurricane Humberto, which devastated the Bermuda coastline in mid-September.

Forecasters predict that up to 70mm of rain could fall in just a few hours in some areas, with flood-related disruption expected as a result.

Emergency drying for history museum in the South of London

Andrews Dehumidification Hire was recently contacted by a popular museum in South London, after the institution required a temporary drying arrangement for a historic paper storage area.

The building in question is ‘Passivhaus’ which means it is built to be environmentally friendly, hence why this particular structure does not have any fixed plant systems. Due to the building being relatively new, the issue had never occurred before and therefore the consequences of high ambient moisture had not been properly prepared for.

Storage facilities at full capacity following Brexit uncertainty

Food, pharmaceutical and consumer products companies up and down the country are struggling to find suitable storage facilities as a direct result of the ambiguity surrounding Brexit.

It was prviously repoted that more than 75% of UK warehouses were completely full, with associated costs soaring by as much as a quarter. Since then, the situation has worsened to the extent that purpose-built storage spaces are now completely unavailable, necessitating that alternatives are found – and quickly.

The narrative of storage scarcity coincides with an increasing demand for so-called Brexit ‘survival kits’ that would supposedly keep the average person fed and watered for 30 days.

Andrews assists Sussex WWII air raid shelter

Andrews Dehumidification Hire was recently contacted with an unusual request to assist the drying of a WWII air raid shelter in Brighton, Sussex, which had previously been concealed beneath the tarmac of a school playground!

Incredibly, workers at Downs Junior School rediscovered a once forgotten air raid bunker situated three metres underground. Since then, volunteers have come together to restore the shelter which experts believe would have originally been used to protect as many as 300 children from Luftwaffe planes. The area has since been converted into a local museum which offers an authentic insight into life during the Blitz.
