At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Andrews Air Conditioning was approached by the estates team of a well-known South London Hospital during a Sunday lunchtime. Our client was looking for an emergency cooling solution to be installed within their post-mortem examination room. A rise in ambient temperatures, combined with the introduction of new guidelines obligating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), had created an extremely warm environment for the pathologists and technicians working inside.
The sensitive nature of the medical assessments being undertaken within the room meant that both doors had to be kept shut for health and safety reasons. A lack of natural ventilation necessitated the use of a temporary air conditioning system, and this was needed on site as soon as possible.
Due to concerns surrounding the potential for the disease to spread, it was decided that the safest course of action would be for the client to provide the dimensions of their application over the phone. This would then allow us to deliver an air conditioning hire arrangement of suitable cooling capacity without our engineers coming in to contact with anyone at the hospital.
Despite receiving the enquiry out-of-hours, our local expert reacted immediately to propose an air conditioning hire package before ensuring it was delivering promptly later that afternoon. Three of our portable PAC 22 units were left at an agreed location on site, with instructions given directly to the customer on how to install the kit. Our specialist followed up with a phone call shortly after to check that all three units were operational.
This project is an excellent example of our ability to adapt to changing circumstances while prioritising a customer’s emergency requirement. By responding in this manner and devising a practical solution, we helped to reduce the temperature inside a critical area of the hospital at a time where medical professionals were under immense pressure to carry out their responsibilities.
