High capacity heating arrangement assists concrete curing process

Temperature can have a major effect on trade works, and it is important to take it into consideration before working with concrete during winter. This applies to both the ambient air temperature and that of the concrete itself, with undesirable conditions likely to affect the strength and integrity of the end product.

The potential for complications caused by cold weather is something construction firms are extremely aware of, prompting a national building and logistics company to approach us before they laid concrete slabs on a development in Milton Keynes.

Sykes Pumps provides off mains drainage solution

Amid the construction of approximately 250 new properties in Essex, Sykes Pumps was contacted by the housing developer and asked to resolve an issue pertaining to the removal of waste and sewage. Despite some of the homes already being inhabited, the surrounding residential area had not yet been connected to a sewer main.

As a result, all sewage was retained within a 15,000-litre cesspool on-site, which naturally requires emptying once it reaches full capacity. With no permanent solution available and our client suffering some negative PR due to the extreme odours being given off, a temporary pumping arrangement was required.

Air purification offers renewed hope in the fight against Covid-19, study finds

High-tech air quality control solutions could put an end to Covid-19 transmissions in hospitals, according to a recent trial.

As part of efforts to tackle Covid-19 outbreaks within healthcare settings, government officials are on the verge of approving a pilot study involving the use of air purifiers in hospital wards.

This is expected to be similar to the investigation recently conducted at a number of schools in Bradford, where air purification systems were used inside classrooms.

The announcement comes just weeks after separate research carried out earlier this year revealed that filtration systems were able to remove almost all airborne traces of Covid-19.

Former RAF airport seeks temporary heating for hangar

Before a newly constructed aircraft hangar could be deemed ready for use, the lead contractor had to ensure that flooring was properly laid to facilitate the storage of planes. Although seemingly a straightforward process in principle, extra care and attention must be paid to guarantee the floor could handle the intense load of aircraft weighing several dozen tonnes.

To achieve this a special resin is chemically fixed to the substrate beneath, which enables it to withstand sustained vehicular traffic and general abrasion. During the application process, temperatures must be maintained at approximately 15⁰C. This can present quite a challenge due to the sheer size of a typical hangar – and this is where we come in!

Drying solution keeps residential development on track

It’s fair to say that Storm Barra has already caused its fair share of problems to people in the UK – a sentiment that can certainly be shared by a nationwide building contractor currently working on a housing project in Southport.

In this instance, there were concerns that the heavy rainfall could lead to the growth of mould or in a worst-case scenario, highly damaging water ingress. Our client was keen to prevent water from permeating the structure’s surfaces due to the hazardous long-term implications associated with penetrative dampness.

Sykes Pumps assists construction of replacement railway bridge

The rebuilding of a railway bridge in Bristol was dependent upon the availability of a reliable pump hire solution. Our client requested an arrangement that would permit the removal of groundwater at multiple locations and allow construction workers to proceed with an upgrade project costing hundreds of thousands of pounds.

As the contractor was required to complete the project within a relatively short space of time, the urgency of the initial enquiry meant we had to act quickly and efficiently to deploy multiple pumps just hours after the call.
