Before the former Manchester Central railway station could open its doors as a functioning temporary field hospital, a solution was required to ensure that shower areas were ready for staff to use. The multi-purpose G-MEX convention complex was quickly converted into a 650-bed medical facility following various interior modifications that were essential in order for this to happen.

Prior to the hospital admitting its first patient, healthcare authorities stressed the importance of nurses, doctors and other professionals having constant access to a safe environment to wash. Our client was keen to find a reliable source of hot water to supply a 60-shower block, which could be operational within a short space of time. They called on us to provide a solution without disturbing contractors overseeing other parts of the fit-out.

Burst water main at Piccadilly Circus prompts emergency response from Sykes Pumps

When a well-known water contractor required an urgent pumping solution following a problem in London’s West End, a local engineer was sent to site immediately. A key water main had burst at Piccadilly Circus during the middle of the night and there were tangible concerns that the significant outflow of water could interfere with the area’s electricity supply. Additionally, the location of the incident meant that an instant reaction would be essential in order to prevent disruption at the Underground station.

The compact 22kW boiler features a built-in heat exchanger to simplify installation, minimise footprint and removes the need for an additional HEX unit on site. This internal heat exchanger allows heat to be exchanged between two fluids without them mixing with one another. This is extremely important if the heating application is working with a chemical or an inhibiter.

Our client was looking for an emergency cooling solution to be installed within their post-mortem examination room. A rise in ambient temperatures, combined with the introduction of new guidelines obligating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), had created an extremely warm environment for the pathologists and technicians working inside.

When the estates team for a well-known South London hospital enquired about hiring a large number of temporary air conditioning units, our regional expert was on hand to advise. The client was looking to cool specific areas of the hospital building, with a particular focus on reducing temperatures inside a maternity ward and some of the individual rooms on the same floor.

It was crucial that we provided suitable equipment for the application without exceeding a very strict expenditure budget that was outlined to us at the point of contact. With this in mind, it was recommended that the customer hire 25 of our Polar Breeze portable air conditioning units. This solution would deliver a combined cooling capacity of approximately 65kW and ensure temperatures were maintained at a desirable level inside the identified locations.

The NHS, space travel and Concorde are perceived to be the ‘coolest’ things in the world, according to a poll of 2,000 British adults.

iPhones, astronauts, and vinyl records also ranked highly, along with E-Type Jaguars, the Japanese bullet train and dinosaurs.

And when it comes to the coolest people, James Bond was the top choice, despite being a fictional character.

He featured higher in the list than former US president Barack Obama, heart throb Tom Hardy, icon Steve McQueen and all-round smoothie, Idris Elba.
