An exciting fantasy action film to be released in 2014, starring Johnny Depp and produced by Walt Disney Pictures, involved some scenes being shot on location in Surrey. The crew were filming a scene in which a waterfall features in the background but they encountered a significant problem as recent low levels of rain meant that the waterfall was running dry. The solution was to artificially create a waterfall effect by using high flow pumps. To ensure the right effect was achieved it was vital that the pump supplier they chose had previous experience supplying pumps to the film industry, which Sykes Pumps have done many times before.

Following the severe weather that hit the South East during the Christmas period Andrews dehumidifier hire have been busy providing assistance to flooded properties. Our Ashford depot is ideally located to provide building dryers and dehumidifiers throughout Kent, where flooding was mainly centred around the Medway area, with Tonbridge, Maidstone and Yalding badly affected.

In Surrey the Mole Valley area was also badly affected when the river Wey burst its banks causing flooding in Godalming, Leatherhead and Weybridge, whilst further upstream Byfleet was also affected. Our local depots were ready with a large stock of dehumidifiers ready for instant delivery. As the storms moved further North our depot in Scunthorpe was ready to provide building dryers to the Humberside area where flooding occurred in Hull and Scunthorpe.

Water purification process speeds up using Sykes Pumps

A well-known UK water authority recently undertook some reconstruction work on its water purification system. The system currently in place involves the use of drainage sumps. Drainage sumps are made up of stones that line a small brook where sewage flows through as part of the filtration process. The lining of the brook needed re-building as micro creatures attach to the stones and eat the sewage; these micro creatures are bad for the purification system.

During this reconstruction Sykes Pumps were called in order to help pump away the dirty water during the renovation process. Our pump specialist had to act quickly in order to supply the correct equipment, as when contacted the client needed the equipment delivering within a few hours. An out of hour’s service was provided and delivery was promptly arranged. The specialist provided the site with three PC2001 Submersible pumps, two GP100M Diesel pumps and one Wispa set 100MM. A settlement tank and road ramp was also provided. The process to wash the stones commenced as fresh water was pumped onto the stones to clean them and then the pumps pumped away the dirty sewerage water. The application was successful and the pumps will remain on hire for a 12 week period.

One of the busiest and longest motorways in the UK has recently required repair work carrying out due to the sheer amount of continual traffic travelling down it each day. Construction work on the road had to be completed at certain times of the day, one section at a time, in order to prevent traffic build up. A ‘bent’ which is a beam mounted on top of pylons 20 meters high and helps support the motorway structure, along the motorway there are around 80 of these bents and which are worked on by engineers five at a time, throughout the year. During the strengthening process, a new protective coating is applied to the “bents”, this coating cannot be allowed to go below a temperature of 5°C for a period of 24 hours after its application, therefore temporary heating is required during the curing period and hence the need for the client to call Andrews Heat for Hire for a solution.

One of the UK’s largest sports arenas was recently used as the venue for a multi-national media and information organisation’s Christmas party. The event organiser contacted Andrews Heat for Hire regarding the possibility of hiring heaters for the event. The client wanted to keep party guests warm during the evening when temperatures lowered. Our experts worked closely with the client to determine what equipment was needed.

For this event, three Andrews FH4000 indirect fired heaters were recommended to deliver a powerful total heating output of one megawatt. A University Challenge for Andrews Boiler Hire

During the summer break at a major UK University it was decided that maintenance work needed to be carried out in preparation for the return of new students in September. Work was commenced on the main heating pipework that also provides hot water for residents. The first challenge was to make sure that there was minimum disruption to the remaining residents on the campus and that their supply of heating and hot water was maintained. Andrews Boiler Hire was called to provide a temporary heating solution for the remaining residents. Our professional engineers installed two 500kW boilers and one fuel tank that provided a fast and efficient solution to the building that required heating and hot water. During the 7 weeks running up to Christmas a renowned supermarket has converted their chilled grocery distribution centre in Birmingham into a storage area for Poinsettia’s. These seasonal plants need to be stored at temperatures of between 6°C and 7°C to ensure that they are in perfect condition when they arrive at the store. Andrews Heat for Hire were contacted by the customer to provide expertise and equipment to overcome the temporary heating requirements.

A local Andrews Sykes site engineer undertook a free site survey of the storage area and implemented an effective plan of action. The engineer recommended the supply and installation of two Andrews Aurora FH4000’s indirect fired high capacity heaters. The heat was ducted into the centre via six lengths of heavy duty ducting, each of 600mm in diameter and 8 metres long. The oil fired heaters were supplied with heavy duty fuel tanks of 3000 litre capacity to ensure continuous, trouble free, unattended operation 24 hours per day. The Andrews Heat for Hire team acted quickly and efficiently to ensure that the storage was kept at the required temperature so that the Poinsettias arrived in first condition in time for the peak Christmas shopping period.

This new heater has been developed by Andrews Sykes experts, with the purpose of offering the most efficient and environmentally friendly heater within the industry.
