Summer’s Coming, and with it ‘Event’ Season has begun. Are You Ready….?

Keeping Guests Cool – Andrews Sykes: quiet and effective chillers and air conditioning

A key issue for Event and function organisers is creating a comfortable temperature without introducing noisy ‘industrial’ equipment. Andrews Chiller Hire division have added a new range of energy efficient 200kW Heat Pump Fluid Chillers to the already comprehensive and substantial national fleet of specialist climate control equipment. The new units, acknowledged as industry leaders for quietness, efficiency, and power, have been designed to work with Andrews Sykes Air Handling Units to cope with unexpected exceptional peak temperatures; hard to believe after our recent ‘double dip’ winter but experience shows us even in the UK we have to deal with periods of extreme temperatures.
The 200kW Semi-hermetic Reciprocal Compressor Heat Pump Fluid Chiller unit is used on standard, process and ice rink applications, and is ideally suited to all year round event work due to its dual usage for cooling and heating via the integrated Heat Pump. Service and general maintenance is minimal and installation and commissioning of the 200kW Fluid Chiller unit can be completed in under 2 hours.” Dennis Gwynne (Technical Director Andrews Sykes Hire Ltd)

UK Film production under stress; keeping the cameras rolling

Andrews Sykes Ventilation Hire keeps production running, on-location

Film sets have always been associated with glamour and excitement. As those involved know, making a film is actually mostly hard work at an industrial scale, and involves bursts of frenetic activity and long periods ‘hanging around’ while sets are made ready. Filming on-location, with less control over the context than in a purpose-built studio, involves even more complexity and risk

The final scenes of the latest Blockbuster movie were being filmed at an old water pumping station in London, which a leading production company had chosen as the most convincing setting. Protecting over a hundred production staff from the effects of smoke used to create the right effect, in a spectacular finale, presented real challenges and threatened to delay production and completion.

Andrews Sykes just miss out on avenging England heartbreak…

In a classic match, spookily reminiscent of Stuart Pearce’s heartbreak as England ‘caretaker’ Manager last February, teams representing Andrews Sykes staff from England and Holland competed in a thrilling game as the company celebrates a successful spell as Charlton Athletic sponsors for the 2012/2013 season.

Held at Charlton Athletic’s home ground ’The Valley’, in South East London, a stone’s throw away from the Andrews Sykes Charlton depot, this was an exciting opportunity for the company to not just reflect on a year of successful sponsorship but also a chance for staff from two nations to meet each other for the first time.

Deadline looming for flood insurance agreement

Recent ‘flash floods‘ in Co Durham indicator of more householder misery to come?

The current agreement between the government and insurance companies has committed insurers to providing cover for homes at high risk of flooding at a reasonable cost. The expiry date for this agreement is looming however, and as June 30th 2013 approaches with no sign of a renewed agreement, homeowners in high risk areas are understandably concerned.

Fortunately, the Association of British Insurers has recently confirmed they will voluntarily continue to offer flood insurance for an additional month after the current agreement expires, pushing the end date back to 31st July. This will give ministers and the industry more time to decide what will happen next.

Pakistan government turns off air conditioning and introduces sock ban

As blackouts continue to plague Pakistan, the government has turned off all air conditioning units at public offices, according to a report in the Guardian today. Despite temperatures of over 40C, the sanction was necessary to conserve power. Instead, the government has issued a new dress code for civil servants which states that moccasins and sandals must be worn without socks.
Pakistan has experienced energy shortages for many years but so chronic is the current situation, that some areas of the country are enduring blackouts of up to 20 hours per day.

Uninterrupted production achieves optimum Return on Investment

Andrews Sykes helps to maintain business continuity for global manufacturing plant

Despite the perception that the UK is a service based economy, manufacturing output still accounts for 7% of UK Plc. No one can deny how tough and competitive this sector is though, and key is to maximise the output of capital intensive plant, even in the face of essential maintenance

When a global biscuit factory needed to replace the flooring at one of their production lines in their London Factory, it was essential to keep production going but no risk of dust or contamination to the process could be allowed. Andrews Sykes Ventilation Hire was asked to provide a robust and dependable solution to extract harmful particles that could affect the biscuit making process.

Green Office week: Seven ways to make your office more energy efficient

Green Office Week
(13-17 May 2013) is all about simple and practical ideas to make your workplace more environmentally friendly. By making just a few small changes, such as encouraging greater resourcefulness and less waste, your company can not only make a real difference to the environment but it can also save money. Here are seven ways how.

1) Switch off lights

Just one standard bulb can use 60 watts of energy per hour, so by turning off the light for an hour a day will save 22,000 watts a year. Think about how you are using your lights – does the toilet light really need to be kept on when it isn’t being used? Do the meeting room lights really need to be on when no-one is in there?

Heat load testing of data centre server rooms mitigates potential in-use disaster

Last week began with the news that the owner of a planned $299.5 million data centre in Iowa had been confirmed as Facebook. The data centre will make use of wind-powered electricity, and begins serving users in 2014.

With over a billion active users posting, commenting, and uploading pictures and videos every day, it is no surprise that it is ‘mission critical’ that Facebook’s huge scale servers are carefully maintained and housed in proven reliable data centre environments. The Iowa centre will be the company’s fourth but undoubtedly by no means last.
