Sykes Submersible Pump Hire needed to flush and test a new heating system

Building regulations for new build offices and commercial buildings recommend a flush, circulation and pressure test on piping systems prior to setting permanent, installed pumps to work. The main objectives are to flush any debris out of a new, or reconditioned system and pressure test the joints. This process requires pressures and flows to be above the normal operating pressures and flows of the permanent installed pumps.

A recent scheme required temporary pumps to flush and test a new heating system with a pressure of 3bar, at a flow of 10 l/s. There was limited access to set up the temporary installation, as the pumps were required to be cited on the roof of a 5 story high rise building. Three Sykes P3001N light-weight Electrical Submersible Drainer pumps, with in- line adaptors, control panels and 20m extension cables were selected. This allowed all of the necessary equipment to be comfortably man-handled via the lift shaft and stairs. This facilitated a quick ‘set up’ and negated the need for an expensive mobile crane. Using electric submersible pumps is the most cost effective option for this type of application.

Sykes Submersible Pump Hire needed for a sewage pipe burst

After a sewage pipe burst during construction work within a busy Sewage Treatment Works, Sykes Pumps were called in to assist. Being the UK’s No.1 Pump Hirer, Sykes Submersibles provided a fast, reliable and cost effective submersible pump hire solution.

Supplying three electric submersible sewage pumps and two electric submersible drainers, Sykes engineers were able to gain control of the flow and over-pump it to another area of the Treatment Works. The solution involved crossing several key access roads in the process, essentially allowing normal operation of the Sewage Treatment Works to continue, whilst ensuring minimal disruption to the construction work.

Activated Sludge Pumping (RAS to SAS).

As part of the secondary treatment process of Sewage, Activated Sludge is transferred to Final Settlement Tanks (FSTs) to allow separation from the purified effluent, which may then be discharged to rivers or some form of tertiary treatment. The settled biomass is called Return Activated Sludge (RAS) which is returned to the beginning of the aeration process where it will absorb fresh sewage and start the process again.

RAS mixing with fresh sewage produces a gradual growth in the activated sludge present, so it is necessary to waste a certain quantity each day. This Surplus Activated Sludge (SAS) is wasted by continuously withdrawing some of the RAS for sludge disposal. Sykes SP80 electric submersible Sludge pumps are commonly hired by Sewage Treatment Works for pumping RAS into SAS channels, whenever head and flow requirements are greater than their fixed pumps can handle. SAS is stored in sludge tanks and is then further treated by digestion, prior to disposal.

Sykes Submersibles provide temporary Aeration

Improvement work being undertaken for a major food processing company included refurbishing the site’s existing Aeration system. This required the activated sludge content of the existing Aeration tank to be stored elsewhere whilst the process was interrupted. The problem with this is that the activated sludge is a live culture and if starved of oxygen the process will not restart when the sludge is returned.

Sykes Submersibles were called upon to design and supply a temporary Aeration system to keep the culture alive during the works. To circulate the sludge for the duration of the work, 6 No. 100mm Electric Submersible Pumps fitted with Venturi Aeration Tubes, each mounted on a frame, were placed into two temporary holding tanks. The system also included starters, electrical distribution equipment and generators, permitting refurbishment to commence immediately.
