You are here :  Home   >  Pumps

As the country’s longest established pump hire provider, we use our experience to provide our customers with the most sophisticated and cost-efficient innovations available. We understand that infrastructure doesn’t sleep, so by being a genuine 24 hours a day business, our engineers can deliver the level of service demanded across the whole of the UK, whatever time day or night. Whether you seek technical advice, equipment recommendations or urgent assistance , Sykes Pumps will deliver on all counts.

Our pumping specialists have specific experience of your sector which has been developed over many years. As such, we can be relied upon to provide a workable solution to the most challenging of problems. All pumping solutions are devised with budget constraints, application needs and any other limiting factors in mind, ensuring the most efficient, appropriate hire package is installed on your site.

We understand the importance of health, safety and environmental considerations, particularly where water and waste are concerned, and we employ a specialist team to ensure that we are constantly exceeding the expected standards. Our efforts have earned us all the relevant ISO standards and we continue to innovate to ensure our clients are at the forefront of their own sectors. As an example, we were the first to offer an environmental pump for hire which runs on bio-diesel.

The need to divert a flow of water or waste is a common yet challenging problem our clients face on a regular basis. This may be the result of a leak in a water pipe or sewer main, or simply the need to undertake work due to local construction projects.

Whatever the requirement, we have a wealth of experience in managing these difficult applications.

We always begin the process with site meetings between our specialists, site managers and the end user client, if appropriate. At this stage, different ways of approaching the problem based on criteria such as local conditions (especially residential and traffic considerations), flow rates and accessabilty will be discussed with the best option offered for consideration.

Options would include the different advantages or otherwise of submersible versus diesel pumps, the size and quantity of the pumps, the size and positioning of pipework and considerations such as automatic control of the pumps and site attendance by our engineers. Once the solution is agreed the relevant risk assessments and method statements will be prepared for sign off and the delivery date and time agreed. From that point on our clients can relax, safe in the knowledge that the project will be managed by the Sykes Pumps team.

There will be times when, due to the result of infrastructure damage or failure, there is simply not the time to consider and discuss all the different options, especially when the problem occurs at an unsociable hour or during peak times. In these circumstances we are just one phone call away, whatever the time of day or night, and will use our expertise to resolve the immediate problem with the minimum of fuss. Once the temporary solution is in place, we will then review how the system could perhaps be improved to either reduce the hire costs or improve site conditions.

At Sykes we understand that our customers purchase or inherit electric submersible pumps from a range of manufacturers. Whilst we cannot hold every pump type and size manufactured, we profile our fleet to match the most common units in the market and hold accessory components so that our pumps can be adapted to suit most situations.

Guide rail installation presents a particular challenge of having pumps to match the installed coupling system, and this is why we have invested considerable time in designing our guide rail adaption kits to make our fleet as universal as possible. This ensures our pumps can easily replace whichever type of sewage pump is being removed.

As standard, our XFP ranges of waste water pumps are ATEX approved for use in gas Zone II hazardous areas and are fitted with premium efficiency IE3 rated motors making our fleet extremely versatile. Whether you need a temporary pump whilst your own is under repair or whilst you await a replacement unit, call Sykes Pumps for an immediate solution. Sewage diversion required for major construction scheme
One of the UK’s leading development companies recently required some overpumping assistance in order to simplify a major sewage diversion. Fortunately at Sykes Pumps, we had the necessary levels of expertise to handle the issue effectively and by doing so helped keep a multi-million pound assignment on schedule. The company in question was looking to overpump a main sewer line and subsequently needed constant flows exceeding 1000 litres per second. The waste system had to be [...]
Lancashire sewage network extended following Sykes Pumps’ intervention
The erosion of a river bank is likely to have both economic and safety consequences if not addressed quickly – particularly in a built-up area. So when the waterfront of a prominent Lancashire river began to wash away, there were fears it could interfere with nearby sewage lines. There was, therefore, an urgent requirement for a new sewer to be constructed and connected to the original network in order to complete a diversion. Sykes Pumps were [...]
Sykes Pumps remove floodwater from landfill site
Generally considered to be the most cost-efficient method of disposing waste, landfill burial remains extremely common throughout the UK, despite the emergence of alternative processes including anaerobic digestion and waste-to-energy incineration. However, climatic factors – particularly heavy rainfall – can seriously affect such sites and slow productivity if not addressed quickly. At Sykes Pumps, we have a wealth of experience working in such environments and as such have developed an unrivalled understanding of their particular requirements. [...]
Leisure facility requests pumps for groundwater removal
At Sykes Pumps, we pride ourselves on handling dewatering schemes efficiently and at the first time of asking. A high water table at a caravan park was causing delays to a construction programme, and when a competitor tried unsuccessfully to rectify the problem, we were asked to provide a solution that would do the required job. Our client originally had three pumps on site but their ineffectiveness meant an alternative pump hire arrangement was necessary. Environmental [...]
Conversion of water recycling centre kept on track by Sykes Pumps
When Anglian Water opted to swap thermal dryers for an HPH advanced digestion system at their recycling plant in Grimsby, our expertise was required to ensure the transition was completed as seamlessly as possible. Complications arose when the client’s existing pumps were unable to handle an increased level of solids content, thus meaning a temporary substitute was essential. We were then drafted in to help ease the situation, with two diesel pumps initially delivered and set-up [...]
Southern Water pumping station kept operational
Pumping stations play a vital role in transporting fluids from one place to another and as such are used across a range of infrastructural scenarios – including land drainage and sewage transfer. So when a Southern Water facility in the Kent area suffered blocked pumps and discharge lines, an emergency solution was necessary to restore the plant’s functionality. A collapsed road nearby had caused sewage and water mains to burst, flooding the gardens of a number [...]
Major water provider requires intervention from Sykes
When regional water and sewage companies encounter difficulties, the implications could potentially affect tens of thousands of people at any one time. So when a northern provider required a temporary pump system while essential maintenance was carried out, they contacted us in search of a tailor-made solution. There was a need to sustain a flow of effluent to a filter tank while the customer’s syphon to spreader arms were replaced. This was accomplished by offering a [...]
Kent-based sewage treatment works assisted by Sykes Pumps
Following prolonged spells of heavy rainfall throughout the last twelve months, 2014 is likely to be remembered as the wettest year on record in the UK. During this time, Sykes Pumps have overseen a number of major projects in order to mollify growing pressure on sewage plants throughout the country. One of those – located in the South East – required additional pumping on site to cope with swelling day-to-day demands. The client wished to increase [...]
